Sound familiar?

Stuck in a rut with emotional regulation goals?

  • Your clients don't seem to be making progress towards their emotional regulation goals.
  • You're using the same strategies, activities or approaches and wondering why they aren't working.
  • You have a few go-to strategies and use them with pretty much every kid.
  • Your emotional regulation goals are secretly "be calm" goals.
  • There's a big gap between what you learnt at uni and what you see on your caseload.
What changes when you assess well

A list of strategies is simply not enough

It's often what clinicians want. We've been through the evidence, and here's what you actually need.

Calm isn't the goal

Calm is a state. Emotional regulation is what lets us monitor, evaluate and adapt based on our goal. A calm kid isn't always a regulated kid, and a dysregulated kid doesn't always look distressed.

Not one skill. A set of them.

Emotional regulation involves monitoring, evaluating and modifying your emotional reactions to accomplish your goals. That's why the generic goal never quite lands and the intervention never quite works.

Good regulation isn't always deep breathing

Sometimes it's reappraisal, situation selection, or even avoidance. The skill is knowing which one fits the child, the goal and the situation.

The reasoning behind the strategy

A clinician who only has a list of strategies can't adapt when they stop working. A clinician who has the reasoning can always find the next thing to try.

★

For new grads and experienced OTs. Whether you're just starting out with a full caseload or you've been practising for years, bring your trickiest emotional regulation client. That's exactly who this is for.

What we'll unpack

Nobody sits you down and shows you how to actually assess emotional regulation, or what to do once you have. You learn it on the job, case by case, usually the hard way.

  • What emotional regulation skills involve, and why it's so hard to define and assess
  • How to effectively assess your clients' emotional regulation skills, because goals and intervention all flow from there
  • Assessment tools, including the screeners and scales we actually use
  • How to tell what's actually driving a dysregulated presentation
  • How to build a defensible goal and know which skill you're actually targeting
  • When, why and how to choose a strategy for the individual child, from assessment all the way through to intervention
